Troubleshoot importing a Web Part

I imported a Web Part description file (.dwp) onto my Web Part Page but it doesn't work.

Possible reasons include the following:
  • The Web Part assembly file (.dll) required for this Web Part may not be installed on the server for the site.
  • One or more Web Part resource files may not be accessible, or you do not have permission to access them.
  • The Web Part assembly file or the Web Part in the assembly file is not marked as safe by the site administrator.
  • The Web Part zone does not allow you to import a Web Part.
  • You have exceeded your SharePoint quota.

For assistance, contact your site administrator or the Web Part developer.

I can't import a Digital Dashboard Resource Kit version 3.0 Web Part.

You cannot automatically import a Digital Dashboard Resource Kit (DDRK) version 3.0 Web Part. You must first manually convert the Web Part before importing it. For more information on how to convert DDRK version 3.0 Web Parts, see the Windows SharePoint Services Software Development Kit.

I'm having problems importing a Web Part.

Possible reasons include the following:
  • The file you imported is not valid. Verify that the file is a Web Part description file (.dwp) and that it contains well-formed XML.
  • The Web Part is not specified as a safe Web Part on your site.
  • You do not have permission to import Web Parts.
  • There may be a problem writing to the database on the site server. Try again later.
  • You have exceeded your SharePoint site quota. Delete unnecessary documents or list data.
  • The Web Part Page does not contain any zones. This situation can occur when there is an attempt to add a Web Part to a Web Part Page programmatically.

For assistance, contact your site administrator or the Web Part developer.

I encounter an error with the XML source code when I try to import a Web Part.

Possible reasons include the following:
  • An unrecognized XML namespace.
  • An invalid file format.
  • A missing XML <Assembly> or <TypeName> element.
  • The use of XSL Transformations (XSLT).

For assistance, contact your site administrator or the Web Part developer.

Troubleshoot exporting a Web Part

I can't export a List View Web Part.

You cannot export a List View Web Part. Lists are specific to a site and cannot be transported to other sites in the same way as other Web Parts.

If you want to move list data from one site to another, in general, you can do try to do one of the following:

  • If you are a user, export the list data from one site, and then import the data into a custom list on the other site, which will then add a List View Web Part of the custom list data to the other Site Web Part gallery.
  • If you are a system administrator, save the list template and its contents to a file, and then upload the list template and contents to another site.

I can't export a Web Part.

Possible reasons include the following:

  • You don't have permission to export a Web Part.
  • You don't have enough disk space. Reclaim more disk space so that the Web Part description file (.dwp) can be saved to your disk.
