Rights and site groups for Web Part Pages and Web Parts

Rights and site groups for Web Part Pages and Web Parts

Use the following sections to help you decide how to grant or deny rights, assign users to appropriate site groups, and manage personalized changes to Web Parts by users.

Typical ways to control Web Part Pages

Security for Web Part Pages and Web Parts is integrated with security for Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. A subset of rights affects Web Part Pages and Web Parts (View Pages, View Items, Add and Customize Pages, Add Items, Edit Items, and Delete Items). Also, there are rights unique to Web Part Pages and Web Parts (Add/Remove Private Web Parts and Update Personal Web Parts). Typically, as a site administrator you would like to control who can do what to a Web Part Page and the Web Parts on it by allowing, for example:

Managing personalized changes to Web Part Pages by users

If at one time any user has had View Pages or View Items rights, but they have been removed, the user can still delete personalizations made to Web Part Pages. The Web Part will revert to its shared property values.

Once a user has personalized a Web Part Page, there is no automatic way to replace these personalized changes by a system administrator or user with appropriate permission. However, a system administrator or user with appropriate permission can go to the Web Part Maintenance Page and delete all personalized changes there. Any personalized changes made by the user will revert to the shared property values.
